Choosing Your First Triathlon Watch

Getting the best gear to use when you decide to join your first triathlon race is one of the most important things to consider when you are a beginner. The right equipment and gear could help you through the race with ease and comfort. There are different things you would need such as a bike, wet suit, shorts, shirt, shoes, and goggles. You would also need some protective gear like a helmet, sunglasses, and hat. Other things like a water bottle, towel, tri bag, kit and more are also important to have during the race. One of the most important yet often ignored though is the watch. A triathlon watch is used to track your metrics regarding swimming, running and biking. It can also be used to monitor your progress during your training and workout sessions. If you are out there to purchase a triathlon watch for your very first race, consider the following.

  1. It can be used for any sport

There are many sport watches these days that can be used for specific sports. However, if you are joining a triathlon, you would need just one watch you could use for the three different sports included in the race. A great triathlon sport can have features that you could use for any of the sports you want to work on.

  1. It should be waterproof

Since you would be using the watch even when you are swimming, it should be waterproof. Some watches do not have this feature as they are only designed for some dry training like running or cycling. Make sure to choose one that would allow you to go deep underwater without worrying if it would still function or not.

  1. It should monitor your running progress

  • Your steps per minute, ground contact time
  • The amount of time it takes for your foot to hit the ground and lift off, and vertical oscillation
  • The time you bounce with every step.

These are the most important things that you need to monitor when you are training for a triathlon. Your watch should be able to have these features in order for you to know what you need to improve in.

  1. It should monitor your cycling progress
  • Check for features that would monitor your speed, distance and also your heart rate. Aside from those, you would also want a watch that could measure your rotations per minute and your power meter.
  1. It should monitor your swimming progress

Make sure that your watch includes swimming features to measure your swimming distance, the length of your stokes and also your swimming efficiency.

  1. It should be comfortable and easy to operate

Some watches might take some time to figure out on how to activate some features. Make sure to choose one that is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Since you would be using the watch during training and on the race itself, make sure that it would not be the cause of your distraction. You can get more advice on the best triathlon watches here.
