There are four main categories of coffee beans: Arabic, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa. The first two are quite common and more popular in markets, especially in North America. However, Liberica and Excelsa are less common in the market.

Arabica (Coffee Arabica)

Arabica coffee beans are grown at higher altitudes. Furthermore, it is tough to grow. This labor-intensive crop is a low-yield plant. It is why Arabica beans are expensive.

Take note that Arabica beans are very sensitive. It immediately loses its taste when cold. Also, blending it with milk or creamer will diminish the quality of its taste.

Robusta (Coffee canephora)

Similar to Arabica, Robusta coffee beans can be grown at above sea-level areas. However, it also farmed in lower altitudes with hotter climates and less moisture. This variety of coffee bean is easier to grow, unlike the former; hence, the reason for its affordability.

If you have high acidity, Robusta is not the right option for you. As much as possible, people with diet restrictions on acidic foods must avoid Robusta coffee beans. It is more acidic compared to Arabica. Moreover, it has a stronger and harsher flavor, since this variety contains higher levels of caffeine. But if you prefer a coffee with more punch, Robusta might suit your taste.

Robusta coffee is famous in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Liberica(Coffee liberica)

A coffee with an aroma of fruits and flowers, and has a woody taste- that is Liberica coffee bean.

Liberica is one of the rarest coffee beans in the market. This variety is grown in specific climates, hence the scarce production. It is larger than most coffee beans and asymmetrical in shape. It has a unique “woody” taste that is a real treat for any coffee lover.

Excelsa(Coffee liberica var. dewevrl)

The Excelsa is not much different than Liberica. It is grown in Southeast Asia and often used in blends as a flavor booster. It has a fruity aroma with a hint of light roast flavors.
