Gender Inequality In Schools Doesn’t Have To Be A Bad Thing

For the longest time education and political leaders have been fighting hard to bring total equality to schools and the work force. This doesn’t just mean equality in race, which is a very popular problem that is brought up quite often, but this also means in gender. Believe it or not there is a lot of inequality in the work force just in who is going where. If you look at any engineering field it is going to be majorly dominated by men – this is just the nature of the job, but be that as it may, it is inequality. This is why there is such a push for women to get involved in physics and math so they can become engineers and try to balance out the work field. So the questions surface – isn’t it okay for particular fields to be made up primarily of men? Isn’t this natural?

But this is just in the work force, the real problem stems from their high school education and experience. Women taking math and physics, two courses used heavily in engineering, are fairly unanimous in saying that they don’t like doing it. It’s not that they can’t because they are women, but it’s because it doesn’t interest them. If you have ever had the experience of being in a class you don’t like then you know you generally don’t do well in that class. You don’t have any motivation to get better at it therefore the chances of you finding a career using those skills is very small. I believe this explains why engineering is such a male dominated career. Men are genetically drawn to being interested in those skills while women prefer others. But if you’re a woman trying to figure out what is right for you, and you find yourself extremely indifferent about engineering, don’t be disappointed – the same situation works for women too as there are many courses and fields that are heavily female dominated.

Any time there is a disproportionate amount of males and females in a given area it will often raise speculation covered in the idea of gender inequality, but those same people that point the finger don’t think about whether it’s natural or not and whether it’s okay. Shouldn’t females be allowed to pursue whatever career they want and not be pressured towards one just to “balance out the numbers”.
